Martin Earns Back-To-Back Podium Finishes at Southwick

SOUTHWICK, MASS. (July 8, 2017) Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Alex Martin grabbed his second-straight overall podium finish with a solid 3-3 effort in the sands of The Wick 338. Round 7 was already challenging with its sandy conditions, but the 250 Class had to deal with a downpour in the second moto as well. Shane McElrath finished just outside the top 10 in 12th with 11-13 moto scores, while rookie Sean Cantrell ended the day in 16th overall with a 14-17. Martin’s day got started with an awesome holeshot in Moto 1. He would lead for nine laps and eventually finish on the podium in third. In the second moto, he nearly grabbed another holeshot before settling into third. Martin kept the leaders close while also holding off pressure from behind to end the moto third for third overall. “After starting the day qualifying 11th, I wasn’t sure how the day would go,” said Martin. “But the team really got me what I needed to run up front and I think it was a good race overall. I am happy we get to have a weekend off from racing before heading back home (to Millville). I’m really looking forward to that one.” McElrath came into the day hoping for the best after grabbing one of his better finishes at the previous round. He started 12th in Moto 1 and was moving forward but a mistake cost him a few spots, moving him down to 19th. He was able to pick off several riders and move up to the 11th spot by the checkered flag. In Moto 2, it was nearly the same site as he started 10th. He was again moving forward but fell back to 15thon Lap 5 and was forced catch back up as the rain fell heavily on the track. He made it up to 13th, giving him 12th overall. Cantrell’s first go with the sands of Southwick provided him with an interesting learning experience, especially when adding in the element of rain in the second moto. To start the day, Cantrell opened Moto 1 in 17th and was able to make moves forward to 14th. In Moto 2, he got a decent start in 11th, but would eventually fall back to 17th. His 14-17 pushed him just outside the top 15 in 16th. The team gets a well-deserved weekend off before returning to Martin’s hometown of Millville, Minnesota for the Spring Creek National. The team started the day off wearing the SE Air Shadow Red and Navy Racewear before switching to the GP Air Prisma Red Racewear for the motos. The team also wore the SE4 Carbon Squadra Helmet.
